In Valchiavenna, in the years 1999-2003, a wide-ranging interdisciplinary research project was developed: “Creation of a pilot basin for the study and monitoring of environmental quality in the Alpine arc”, precisely called “Valchiavenna Project ”, financed by the Cariplo Foundation and co-financed by the CNR-Rome, Headquarters.
Valchiavenna was chosen for this purpose because it offers an ideal terrain for observation and control of the Alpine environment both from a climatic, geographical, geological and naturalistic point of view, as well as from a socio-economic and anthropic point of view.
Considering the importance that environmental issues are increasingly assuming, also in light of climate change and the consequent repercussions on water resources, the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Milan has intended to stabilize and develop the wealth of knowledge and experiences acquired by establishing a geo-environmental station in Chiavenna.
The Station’s activities are divided into scientific research, university teaching, technical and training support to the CM and the Municipalities, scientific dissemination and training.
